How Do I Prepare for FUE Hair Transplant?
Thinking about doing a FUE hair transplant? Well, first you must know how to prepare for it. Starting with the definition of the FUE procedure: FUE, or Follicular Unit Extraction, is a hair surgical hair transplantation technique where the cosmetologist extracts healthy hair from other parts of the body and implants it on your head. If you are thinning or balding, you are the perfect candidate for the FUE procedure.
In this blog, we have discussed a few things you must do before undergoing the FUE procedure.
One Month Before FUE Hair Transplant
With your surgery being just 4 weeks away, you need to manage and ensure that your scalp is as healthy as possible. To do this, you must massage your scalp for at least 10-15 minutes every day. This helps in regulating blood flow, which in turn helps to strengthen the hair follicles. In addition, it also helps in the healing process after the procedure. Also, at this stage, the doctors will discuss the hair transplant cost.
Also, you must take care of the following:
- Medications: If you take beta blockers or any other medications, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider or doctor to seek advice on the continuation of the medications. Inform them about the procedure. They might adjust the medication or dosage accordingly.
- Hair Length: For FUE, you must shave the back and sides of your head. Also, it would be best if you have shorter hair (shoulder length is mostly preferable).
- Inform your workplace about your leave to avoid any complications post-surgery.
- Exercise daily, as it will keep you healthy and minimize any risks or complications that might occur after surgery.
Three Weeks Before FUE Hair Transplant
Ensure that all the tests and blood work are done 3 weeks prior to the FUE procedure. Follow up with the doctor so that they can advise you if you can take certain medications, for example, aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs that are known to cause more bleeding during the surgery.
Also, let your doctor know if you are taking any blood thinners or anti-depressants, as these medications can lead to delayed healing. In addition, you must also stop drinking alcohol at least three weeks before the surgery. This is because alcohol widens the blood vessels, which increases swelling at the incision site.
One Week Before the FUE Hair Transplant
By this time, you must quit smoking, as nicotine makes it difficult for oxygen to move through the blood – which increases the chances of scarring and infections. Also, you might be given antibiotics to help with infection – which your doctor will instruct you on how to take. In addition, you must stop taking vitamin E and B supplements or tablets as they delay the healing process and possibly increase the bleeding.
On the Day of the FUE Hair Transplant
Before the FUE procedure, it is important to have a good night’s sleep. In addition:
- Shampoo your hair properly to get rid of any residue or dirt.
- Have a full breakfast and take your medications (as advised by the doctor).
- Do not wear any perfume or cologne.
- Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes. Wear something comfortable such as a shirt.
- Avoid wearing t-shirts that need to be pulled over your head.
It is natural to feel nervous before the FUE hair transplant. However, it is important to talk to your doctor about the procedure. You will be talked about at every step, and the doctors will guide you through the journey.
